SHARING BETWEEN BUSINESS UNITS

Amoco Progress Group - Guidelines posted on intranet: Managers are required to confer with other business units at the beginning of the process and to store what they have learned in a database at the end.

BP - After action reviews are completed after a project - the focus is to capture the learning from the things that went right - and the things that went wrong. The knowledge distilled from these sessions is then made available to colleagues worldwide, via the company's intranet. [Source]

INCENTIVES - REWARD SYSTEMS

Change your company's reward and recognition system to reward sharing knowledge.

Hewlett-Packard - To show value for knowledge, they set up a micro-economy called Net-Card whose currency is knowledge. When a report, for example, is posted to the intranet, its "success" as a valuable piece of knowledge is measured by the number of people who pay a small fee (which goes back to the department of the sender) to download it. A Web-based directory, for example, offers a searchable, relational database featuring profiles of thousands of employees' expertise, interests, and geographic locations. [Source]
