InQuery Web based data mining tool.   Builds off related concepts - not a visual map, but list of terms you can click to add them to enhance your search. Searches for specific word patterns, weights them according to their value in a particular search. After scanning a collection of documents, it produces a score to indicate the relevance of specific texts.  30 day trial is available. Owned now by Dataware.

Infoseek Ultraseek

Microsoft Index Server - Traditional retrieval techniques to provide a method for searching many different text sources, including Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. It is bundled free with Microsoft's NT operating system and can be extended to other formats.

Netscape Compass - Compass robots gather content from a corporate intranet or the Internet. The robots can be customized to submit summarized or full-text versions of this content to Compass Server. This information is then indexed and categorized according to user-defined categorization rules and made available to the end user via the Compass Server home page, which is accessible using any web browser.

UNIQUE WEB SEARCH ENGINES

Google! A search engine that finds results in part by looking to see how frequently a site is linked to by other sites and on that basis ranks sites by  importance.  It also looks for words close together rather than anywhere on a page or site.  Interesting display - a bar graph allows you to see what pages linked to it.

Proteus An assistant for searching the various web search engines - easily permits you to search for images, for example, using the major engines without you having to look up the proper syntax in each engine for the search.
